WELL-BEING MANAGEMENT

A pathway towards stress resilience through love, sense and safety

Research shows that mental well-being is a great strategy towards stress resilience. The higher your stress resilience the lower your tendency to be anxious or depressed.

Three main factors are linked to well-being:

  • A sense of love, belonging and connectedness (friends, family);

  • A sense of purpose (career, spirituality);

  • Safety within yourself (health, identity).

Love and belonging

The quality of well-being and happiness depends on your perception of being cared for and how satisfied you are in your close relationships. Creating nourishing connections requires, amongst others, presence, identity, emotion regulation and mindful communication (see Home – Emotion Regulation, Identity, Relationship, Mindful Communication). However, relationships can be difficult when you have had bad experiences in the past and your trust was broken. Common protection mechanisms from being hurt again can be disconnection, detachment and emotional numbing.

Sense of purpose

Most humans strive for a sense of purpose which gives them the motivation to get up in the morning and to connect to a greater good. Engaging in a project that makes sense induces inspiration and creativity and links us to our passions and beliefs. It creates the feeling of fulfillment and authenticity.

Inner safety

Our perception of mental and physical safety is directly linked to our nervous system which gets easily agitated when it feels endangered. This can result in anxiety, panic attacks, palpitation, trouble breathing, sweaty hands, unable to think clearly etc. This so-called state of hyper-arousal impacts the quality of our inner safety greatly. Hence, a regulated nervous system is mandatory for our well-being.
